As we reached the foot of the hill, the air felt cooler, and the atmosphere was thick with the rhythmic chanting of devotees. We decided to take the traditional route—the 1,305 steps.

The thrill wasn’t just the climb; it was the view. With every hundred steps, the world below shrank. The lush green fields of Vellore district stretched out like a patchwork quilt, and the cool mountain breeze began to whip around us, carrying the scent of wild jasmine and damp stone. It’s an exhilarating workout that leaves your heart pounding—not just from the physical exertion, but from the sheer awe of the landscape.

A “Divine” Surprise

The most outstanding moment of the trip happened halfway up the hill. Sholingur is famous for its resident primates—the monkeys. We had been warned, but nothing prepared us for the playful chaos! Watching fellow travelers share oranges and bananas with the monkeys while balancing on the steep staircases added a layer of excitement (and a bit of healthy adrenaline) to the ascent.

The Summit Experience

Reaching the top was truly triumphant. The Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple, carved into the rock, felt like a sanctuary suspended in the clouds. The architecture is a marvel—centuries-old inscriptions, towering pillars, and the silent, imposing presence of the deity.

Standing at the peak, looking out over the vast, shimmering plains of Tamil Nadu, the chaos of Chennai felt like a lifetime away. A sudden, unexpected drizzle swept across the hill just as we entered the inner sanctum, adding a mystical, cinematic quality to the experience.
